The Smithtown Bull
"Whisper"
This large anatomically correct 5 ton bronze statue of a bull is located in Smithtown at the fork of Jericho Turnpike and 25A. Local legend has it that the Native American Indians made a pact with Smith, an English settler who knew a good real estate deal when he saw one. He could keep whatever land he circled in a day's time riding on his bull named ``Whisper.''

Smith waited for the longest day of the year in 1665, to take the ride. He started at the east end of what is now Smithtown, then went south to Ronkonkoma, then west to Hauppauge and north along what is today Veterans Highway and then on to Town Line Road, which marks the town's western border, and then last to the north to the edge of Long Island Sound.

The 14-foot-tall bull was unveiled atop a new concrete pedestal on May 10, 1941.

It still stands watch today over the bustling intersection and has become a cult figure for local students who occasionally paint the bull's private parts as a rite of passage.
