The July 4th weekend in 1978 included a true Independence Day for motorists who used the Southern State Parkway. That was the weekend that tolls were removed from the roadway after 24 years.
Tolls were introduced in 1954 in connection with an improvement project for the parkway. Initially 10 cents, the toll later went up to a quarter. After years of lobbying by Long Island officials, toll booths on the Southern State and the Loop Parkway from Jones Beach to Point Lookout were removed in 1978.

i remember that toll booth because in 1978 were going from queens to LI to look at a house my parents wanted to buy, but shortly after it was gone. my parents ended up buying that house in october of 1978 but the toll booth was there before july 4th when we came out to LI looking at homes with my parents.
Are the toll booths still standing on the Sagtikos Pkwy?

Therewas a toll booth on the southern state in just as you entered valley stream.

I think there is still a toll booth to get into the park at the north end of the Sagtikos. I wasn't around in 1978 so it's very hard for me to imagine these being on the Southern State....must have been such a pain in the ass!!

I vaguely remember the tool booths on the SSP, we almost never came that way so there was no reason to go through them...
I'd love to find more pictures of them though...
