This weekend I took a trip to the Poconos, and stopped at Walpack Center, NJ. Walpack is a town that was abandoned in the 60's when the government bought it. They bought many small towns near the Delaware Water Gap and kicked everyone out because they were planning to create a new reservoir. It never happened, because of the large threat of salmonella, so Walpack's just been sitting there.
The town is very tiny, with maybe 7 or 8 buildings, all of which are the same shade of white. There's a church, town hall, gas station, post office, and a few houses. There are also some houses and other abandoned buildings throughout the woods. I didn't get to do much exploring because my fiance isn't into this stuff, so the pictures are quite boring. Along the way I had seen some of the abandoned houses in the woods, and also in the distance there was an abandoned farm. Here is a link that explains some more history on the town, and a military trail that runs through. It also gives some examples of where things are such as a cemetery and some abandonments. The trail is not accessible by vehicle.
The state park owns the property and has been slowly doing work on some of the buildings in the main part of town where I was. One building serves as a museum during the warmer months, and another seems to be some sort of park office. If anyone does decide to walk to the trail or go into the woods to check out some of the abandoned houses and such, I would be careful because this is where I saw the black bear with her cubs running around (I posted this pic in the picture a day thread). I was told that they are having a problem up there with the black bears.
