    Abandoned - Homan Cemetery, Brookhaven

This is a family cemetery that was abandoned in the 1930's after some reports of "vandalism" (I read that as grave robbing). The headstones were moved from their original location to the South Haven Church Cemetery and the Oaklawn Cemetery. Rumor has it that only the headstones were removed, destroyed or buried and that the bodies were never actually exhumed for reinternment.

The cemetery now sits reclaimed by nature withing the confines of the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge. Supposedly the only remnants of the cemetery are a few deep indentations in the ground among the trees.

It's a shame that a family is now left, semi-forgotten in unmarked graves.

In the late 1870's lots and lots of headstones were moved from private plots to more formal cemetaries. Mostly, the stones were moved but the bodies remained. Revolutionary war spy Austin Roe is currently planted under a well manicured front lawn of a Patchogue home.

The owners have never considered having the body removed to a "better" location? lol... Who knows how many of our homes have people buried on our property...

Im sure the homeowners have no idea. Remember, were talking 1870's....

In the Austin Roe case, I'm sure they have no idea that the body is still there. Besides I'm sure it would cost them a decent amount of money in legal fees to move him.

The body is dust by now. The Homan site is one I was going to search out. Trying to figure the best way in.

Don't they have organizations or volunteers who help keep these small forgotten cemeteries well maintained?

Brookhaven does Lubby, they have a wealth of information on their website.

Curly, let me know when you plan on going. I really want to check out the Homan cemetery. The best bet may simply be going to the Wertheim Refuge and wandering off of the trail and south towards the old duck farm.

Isn't the duck farm a public dog run on Montauk hwy. Maybe you can get access from there..

I believe you are correct, Richit. I haven't been by there in a while but I do believe the dog run was open the last time I went by.
