Did he serve in Cuba? I do know that 4 troops of the 1st USVC Regiment (aka Rough Riders) were left behind in Tampa due to the lack of space on transport ships. Troop H was one of them but I am not sure about Troop M.

My great grandfather was a US Army Medical Corps officer along the Mexican border in 1915/1916 during the hunt for Pancho Villa and the border war with Mexico, and later served in France during World War I.
