Many people hated Robert Moses because of the amount of lane he emminent domained for his highways. Think about this without him what would the LI/NY road system look like? You think you hate the LIE now!
Another quick highway tidbit, if you've ever gone over the Verrazano and wondered why those overpasses to nowhere are there the plan was to build another east/west highway called the North Shore Expressway. It was supposed to follow the abandoned Staten Island Rapid Transit line that ran on the north end of the island. I believe the SI Expressway interchange was the only part ever built.
Yea but the RR down the center of the LIE that was originally proposed and he nixed should have been built....
Moses believed the automobile and not the railroads were the future of transportation. That's why he went crazy building highways everywhere he could.
Just imagine if the Clearview Expressway went all the way to Kennedy Airport like it was suppsed to.
The problem is now that all these highways that should have been can never be done without pulling some serious eminent domain and lots of court battles...
Hello Jim, Welcome aboard. Theres just too many people on the island now. We keep improving roads, widening them, creating new ones and it just keeps the folks coming. And we will never get ahead. More roads = more people = more misery......
