    Seaford: Then & Now

Schoolhouse to firehouse to museum. Glad to see it living on.

Oh nice, I pass this all the time and actually never knew it was a museum.....somehow missed that huge sign LOL. Is it always open or just certain days/hours like the Wantagh one?

Amazingly original for a 117 year old that has served multiple functions. Wonder if the school bell is still up top?

Also curious, are the double doors for "Boys" and "Girls" or "Colored" and "White" ? Any time you see a school with an entranceway like that it's one or the other....and with public schools it's usually race. Do you know what the "SFP" stands for?

Not sure on any of that, really, except that they're only open at certain times, just like Wantagh. I'd be very interested to know more about the double doors, and if your theory could be true. I'm thinking that P might be a B... Seaford Fire Brigade? I can't guess at much else. I live all of three blocks from this place. I think you live very close to me, man.

Notice the glass at the top of the tower in one shot, and the louvers in the other? Not to mention the top of the tower, itself.

Oh wait....it's a "D"...."Seaford Fire Department" LOL....I thought the drawing was supposed to be it as a school.

I don't live that close to there, but I always use either Jackson or Washington as a cut through from Sunrise->Merrick Rd or vice-versa, especially when I'm coming down 135 to avoid the NCPD highway patrol checkpoints near the 7th precinct. I live in Wantagh, off Wantagh Ave and near the SSP.....close, but not quite Seaford!

You just made me think of something else.....if you've lived here for awhile, didn't the Seaford FD used to have something similar to that circular object in the first drawing out front? I can vaguely remember going to the Seaford Christmas Tree lighting when I was really young and playing around something like that. Could be wrong.....I remember it being blue with a red frame. Is that like some universal fire department symbol??

I think that thing is still in front of the firehouse on the next block. I grew up in Bay Shore, so learning the history of Nassau has been an interesting process... and it's still ongoing. You live near that little cemetery, and the historical marker that says where Jerusalem used to be, no?

Yup, RIGHT near there haha.....that marker is new (within the last year). I think there may have been an identical one years and years ago, but never in my lifetime.

And "Jerusalem" is still here, it's just not called that anymore!

I do believe that I'm the first person with a sketch in "Then and Now".
