Do they still run the elephants through the midtown tunnel in the middle of the night. If they do, is this because the tunnels can't handle the height of the railroad cars?
Thanks,
Bruce

The train comes in through NYC to LI via Penn Station. Freight isn't allowed through there since the grades are to much but this train is an exception. LIRR takes it from Amtrak and runs it to Garden City. The following week the train is moved to LI City where they take the elephants in through the tunnel to MSG.

Thanks for the info. I got good memories of the circus. Saw the first one in the old Madison Square Garden in March or April 1960. A guy was walking the tightrope 40 feet up and fell. 4 men holding a net about the size of a king size bed sheet, caught him in the net fireman style. I don't know if the guy lived or died. Quite impressive stuff for a 6 year old. I have to do a NY Times search for that year and see if anything is mentioned. Thanks again for the circus train info. I always saw the elephants running from Brooklyn into Manhatten, but not the other way around.

I seen the circus about 4 years ago, and it was pretty bad unfortunately..

Do you know what time the train comes into Garden City Would love to see that.
All I know so far is there bringing it through Penn after rush hour.

Well, I solved a 50 year old mystery today. I found out in a NY Times article about what happened to the guy who fell off the highwire. He lived. It happened on Saturday April 23, 1960 at the old Madison Square Garden. I was 6 years old that afternoon when I witnessed it 50 years ago. This is why these databases are useful to researchers.
