    World's Fair Train

I came across this slide by an unknown photographer taken on a evening in October 1964. It is a LIRR train leaving Willet's Point station in Queens, the site of the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. It is unusual as it was taken in available light and high speed color firm was just coming on the scene. Also notice the construction of the car. I rode on this train when I visited the NYWF in 1965.

Same October day 1964. Arriving in the morning at NY World's Fair via Willett's Point station. I guess hats and mink stoles were in for women in those days! ;D

Willet's Point station during 1964-65 NY World's Fair. You can see the fair in the background. I'll post a modern day photo of the same station from the same angle if I can find it.

Those men's hats should come back into style as well!

I was only around eight or ten at the time, but I think President Kennedy's refusal to wear a hat started the trend towards doing away with men's hats. If you watch The French Connection or Kojak filmed in the very early 70's you will still see Manhatten men wearing hats.

Hats are cool man. I don't think i would wear the type the guys in the above RR car are though. Something more up to date!

Isnt that the USA pavillion on the right in the Willets point shot? That would be where the Arthur Ashe studium is now. I really enjoy these old photos, you can tell a lot about the people just by there look.

Yes, that was the old United States Pavilion, torned down in 77 I believe. A tennis stadium stands there know. Also there is the old NYWF's Singer Bowl stadium next to it not seen in the photo. You might also notice the old railroad Saw Tooth building just behind the fence. It got it's name because of the shape of it's roof line. That's gone now also.

Here's an old McCloud clip filmed in the spring of 1972, a few years after the fair closed. The U.S. Pavillion was still standing at the time and can be seen in the background, but the action centers around the New York State Pavilion.
