I think I may have gotten tagged by one last night in Bethpage... Making a left as the light turned red!

I'm still not sure how I feel about these things. I mean, sure, it's designed to keep people from pushing the limits past the point of normality, but there's that whole grey area of driving by the book, and driving within reality.
I also don't like the concept of replacing live bodies with cameras when it comes to traffic. However, there is something to be said about keeping the public honest... because, let's face it, there are a good number of people out there who aren't.
That was you?

"Well being as there's no other place around the place, I reckon this must be the place, I reckon."
At these intersections there will be more rear end collisions because when the light turns yellow people will slam on their brakes. I read about this in Car & Driver a few years back. It's just another revenue source for politicians.
I was making a left so hopefully my car was on enough of an angle that the camera couldn't get it since it's aimed to shoot straight down the road...
Supposedly 60% of the tickets issued since Nassau installed them have been for rights on red...
Hmmm...I think I should stop making right turns on red lights when I'm not suppose to.
To Know, To Dare, To Will, To Be Silent
The damn one on the corner of Wantagh Ave & North Jerusalem Ave in Levittown WAS taking pictures of every single car going through (even when green) but they must have fixed it...
I thought I got nabbed by one for sure on Northern Boulevard in Little Neck a few months ago but so far no tickets in the mail (crosses fingers :-X)
True, it's a whats worse scenario....someone rear ending the driver who stopped, or the driver up front gunning it and hitting another persons car side on that is crossing the intersection...Originally Posted by Zen
IF you drive the speed limit, blowing a red light normally isn't a problem. You would have ample time to slow your car down from such speed after seeing the light turn. AND, if everyone kept a safe distance, and also did the speed limit, you'd never have to worry about them hitting you when you stop. But this is real life, and who drives the speed limit? lol I don't know what to think about cameras. On one side, knowing how much people are killed each year from people speeding through red lights just because they don't feel like stopping, if the cameras help to reduce that I guess they are good. On the other hand, cameras are lacking one crucial part of law enforcement...digression. And we all know there are circumstances where it is safer to blow the light than it is to stop (i.e; imagine someone riding your ass up to the intersection, or maybe there is a semi truck close behind ect..).
Then again, there are also a lot of police officers with awful digression that probably wouldn't take into account any of those things either.
"A shadow is cast wherever he stands, stacks of green paper in his red right hand"
What I don't understand about these cameras is wouldn't it be pretty easy to just argue that you were not driving your car? I mean, tickets are issued to a driver, not the car. If I let my friend borrow my car and he blew a light with a camera, why should *I* get the ticket?

The tickets are issued to the owner of the car not the driver just like a parking ticket, they carry no points....Originally Posted by nocturnal396
The cameras do cause more rear enders... It's not the people who just blow through the light that are the problem here. It's those who are already past the point of being able to stop when the light turns yellow who slam on their brakes in an attempt to stop. I've seen people skid through an intersection on a Yellow light where there is a camera installed....
And yes, cameras lack the fundamental tool in VTL enforcement, Discretion!
