AAA names Southern State one of state's worst roads
The Southern State Parkway has achieved another dubious distinction, it is one of New York's "worst roads" in a list compiled by AAA.
AAA New York ranked the parkway fourth in its list of the five worst roads in New York, as featured in the August issue of Car & Travel magazine. The Cross Bronx Expressway topped the list put together by AAA New York's Traffic Safety staff.
The magazine noted that the Southern State's "dangerous curves combined with speeding cause a high crash rate."
"It's got blind curves. It's got severe elevation changes, like hills that [you] can't see over. The lanes are particularly narrow," said AAA spokesman Robert Sinclair Jr., as he described some of the parkway's flaws.
Especially dangerous is the stretch of roadway between Exits 17 and 32 that has come tobe known as "Blood Alley" because of its high accident rate, Sinclair said.
DOT spokeswoman Eileen Peters said the parkway was not designed for the high volume and high speeds it sees today. The DOT has made several safety improvements on the road over the years, and will continue to do so. "It's a very nice, pleasant, tree-lined road," Peters said. "And it's safe, when drivers drive 55 miles per hour and follow the rules of the road."

I heard about this today on the radio. I have to agree with AAA, that highway sucks.

I came over that one hill going east one day and couldn't tell that traffic on the other side was at a dead stop... Both feet on the brake and I managed to squeak to a stop in the median... I hate that road... I'd love it if there wasn't a single car on the road with me and I was driving a 911, lol...
