West of the pool is/was a wooded area where they kept some animals caged up. I do remember a red fox as one. Had many family get togethers there and that place brings back great memories.
Who cared for the animals? This sound like the way Brookhaven Animal Park got started..

I was only a youngin, so it may have been the animal shelter, or an employee that also took care of them (before liability and other things that took fun away) may have.
Just a guess, though.
