    Long Islands Old Schoolhouses

So, Im back to hunting down all the remaining Schoolhouses on the Island. On Saturday night, I compiled my initial list and came up with 71 potential schools that I believe still stand in Nassau & Suffolk. I will be posting them as I find them here. I will begin shortly after I download some recent finds. If you got em, post em.

    16) The Centereach Cottage Schools. Centereach. Circa 1955. During the building of the Unity Drive School by the Middle County School District the children were taught in cottages that were across the street from the planned school. Eight cottages were leased and each one taught a different grade level. The one on the furthest right was for Kindergarten and as you moved to the left the grade levels went up and stopped at 7th grade. The children had a front row seat to watch as their new school was built.
The house at the extreme right was for the kindergarten.

The one on the left end was the final cottage used for 7th grade.

These cottages were only used for a couple of years. In 1956, the Unity Drive School was opened.

These cottages are now homes that have seen many renovations making them all different but they all have one thing in common. They were for a short time, Schoolhouses.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

I know that there was an old school that was burned down by some high school students not far from five corners about 40 or 50 years ago (near the newer little league ball fields west of Sachem North).....Also I think there is a Small building that is now used as a shed, just east of 5 corners that was part of a school or something (Curly probably can tell you more)....

The deli was not a schoolhouse but was on the site of one. The original building was cut in half. One half was moved down the road and eventually burned while the other was moved across the street and used as a shed/garage. Its still there and on my list. Will get photos of it soon.
