Call me a liar, you knew.
You were a fool, but that's cool, it's all right.

Had a black squirrel hanging out in my backyard a few years back. I felt bad because the grey squirrels would always chase him around. Then a few months later I saw a dead black squirrel in the street by my house. I really hoped it wasn't "my" squirrel, but never saw one again after that... I was very sad :-(. **sigh**

I still catch em here and there in Lake Grove. Always by the old Lake Grove School.

My brother has relocated over 60 squirrels in 18 months....he never mentioned that any were black or odd colored. Maybe brown or albino?

There is a "colony" of black squirrels on the former Porter/Pyribil estate here in Glen Cove (now the Glen Cove Golf Course).

Local legend claims that the black squirrels were brought from England by the estate owner. (I won't dispute the claim that they are a melanistic variant of eastern grey squirrel without DNA evidence). However, all the articles I find on black squirrels in England claim they are mutations of introduced American eastern grey squirrels, and that they are pushing the non-native population of introduced American eastern grey squirrels out. The eastern grey squirrels had been pushing the native English red squirrel out.

Squirrels, can't we just get along?? "All we are saying... is give squirrels a chance..."

No red squirrels here on the island. Wish there were. Upstate NY, deep in the pines of the adirondacks (sic) is where they reside and yes they are being pushed out by the greys. Pushy little buggers!

i've mentioned that to him, but he believes the 2.5 mile drive is far enough that that wouldn't.

I suggested he spray paint their tail tips fluorescent orange so he knows for sure.

I told him they probably jump back on the bumper of your truck after you think they've run off into the woods.

Black squirrels are very common up north. I lived in Toronto for a few months and they're everywhere. The further south you get, the less common they become, but I've never seen one on LI...
