The Swan River Schoolhouse in East Patchogue was built in 1858 on land purchased from Stephen S. Roe. The purchase price for the land was $25 and the deed conveyed that the land only be used for a schoolhouse. The historic building remains on its original site and still has many of the original desks and books. The stove dates to its 1858 construction as well. It hasn’t been used as a school since the 1930’s according to records and is only opened periodically as a polling place. The schoolhouse is now a mini-museum featuring displays of children's items and area memorabilia.
Open by appointment April through Oct.; and 1-4 p.m. Sun. July 13 and 27, Aug. 10 and 24, 2008
