• Big Chief Lewis

A giant Indian Chief statue that has kept vigil over the Sunrise Highway in Massapequa since he was built by Rodman Shutt of Strasburg, PA and erected on May 21, 1968. Rod Shutt created many other giants, including the Charlemont and Freeport Indians, figures for Dutch Wonderland, and the York Barbell Man. Shutt also produced a large number of Santa’s. He began building these figures in 1960 using fiberglass and sealastic and built each figure individually.
The totem pole next to the Chief was made by the Cherokee Indians of 2000 lbs of Locust wood. According to legend…….

“Touch a totem pole and make a wish. Before many moons have passed your wish may come true.”
