One of the oldest structures in the town of Coram is the Davis Meeting house. Also known as the Lester H. Davis house, this structure is an important part of Town history, serving as Brookhaven’s seat of government from about 1784-1885 and housing the state militia thereafter. The parade grounds are preserved in the adjacent Daniel R. Davis Sanctuary. In 1790, a government official was looking for a more convenient place for polling and chose Coram for its centralized location. This was the seat of Brookhaven government for over 100 years. Through these doors passed Benjamin Tallmadge, who was returning from a successful raid on Fort St. George in Mastic in 1780 and General George Washington returning to Long Island in 1790, as the first president of the new nation.
Currently, “The Middle Country Road Renaissance Project” and “The Longwood Alliance” have taken on the project of historic preservation and restoration to this place and others. To date, the roof and sills have been replaced and the structure has been lifted for repairs to the foundation.
