Return to Bygone

The LIRR Experimental Farm

The second experimental farm, "Prosperity Farm" was begun in Medford in 1907 and was operated by Hal B. & Edith Fullerton. These two set out to show Long Island to be a "Garden of Eden", an agricultural paradise. All sorts of produce were grown here.... Fruits, vegetables, shrubs, ornamentals. The site was transformed into a secluded paradise. Before long they were shipping crates of vegetables to New York City and Long Island markets and winning blue ribbons at the county and state fairs. The Long Island Railroad would set up excursions to visit these farms and show the public that the land was not sour or barren.

It’s still there, no longer a farm but a patch of woods. Lots of brambles and brush, but it still shows a few signs of the bygone time.  The barn on the Old Munsell Road is the only structure still standing from the farm. There appears to still be growing raspberries, blueberries and grapes.  Also, found were Apple trees, Peach trees and a small bamboo forest.  The last remnant was the remains of a buckboard or wagon. Most of the wood is long gone but it is still identifiable.
