The Shattuck Estate is a beautiful abandoned stucco mansion located and owned by Nassau County. Nassau County bought the property back in the early 1970’s, and wanted to turn it into a golf course or sell it for a housing development. In 1972, Carl Ross, who is a resident of Plainview, fought to turn the Shattuck Estate and it is 138-acre parcel into a preserve. He won the fight, and it is now known as Manetto Hills Park. All that is known of the Shattuck family is that Frank Garret Shattuck, founder of Frank G. Shattuck Company, operated a chain of Schraff stores and restaurants, in which he sold chocolate and ice cream. He had stores located around New York and other eastern cities. Frank Shattuck also joined forces with W.F. Schraff and Sons Corporations in 1906, and it was incorporated under the name of Frank G. Shattuck Company. All that is known is that a family member of the Shattuck’s once owned the property.
